Gimmel rings are attributed to French in origins and were given in friendship or as popularly used in the Renaissance, as tokens of love or betrothal.
“Gimmel”, comes from the Latin word“gemellus”, which means twin. The gimmel ring is made up of two or more separate ring bands, when the bands swivel and align they become one ring, symbolizing the union of two people.
